Using art as my principal research tool, I made a detailed study into the socio-ecological challenges facing local communities living in the Kisumu region around Lake Victoria in Kenya. These challenges have arisen as a result of the invasion of water hyacinth, a highly competitive ‘alien’ weed from South America, which poses significant threats to the native aquatic ecosystem, as well as the livelihoods of local communities.

The project evolved from a concern about the provenance of my own artistic tools, which inspired me to investigate novel ‘use-values’ from local waste materials. Employing the scientific method of pyrolysis, I produced batches of artists’ charcoal using discarded biomass. Upon visiting Kisumu, I developed a nuanced understanding of local artisanal adaptations to water hyacinth. This was made possible by working alongside communities, with whom I harvested and dried the weed, transforming it into useful, marketable commodities. I also held focus group discussions and one-on-one interviews with members of the local community to learn about their unique practice.

I hope that the work produced will inspire my audiences to think more deeply and creatively about the materials they use and, in particular, the values that could be attributed to materials otherwise deemed waste.
