My artistic practice plays on our individual epistemologies – how each of us see and interpret objects and phenomena in relation to our own diverse make-up of experiences, cultures and traditions. Over the last few years I have become inspired by the use of collage, a technique to make sense of "moments within a complex epistemological framework” (Lonie 2010). Through a dynamic engagement with different artistic techniques, materials and processes, I examine the divergent values of a globally connected community; my work explores the nature of our relationships with one another and with the environment we live in.
Collage, being a “way of thinking about looking and knowing” (Sontag 1977) can be used to inspire dialogues between people and places, to enthuse onlookers to consider their own epistemological perceptions of the wider world.
This interplay between art and ecology was inspired by the work of Edward Burtynsky: I was stirred by his dualistic drive to champion the wealth of the natural world whilst simultaneously reminding us how easily the same can be destroyed by a lack of knowledge or will to act responsibly.
